tips in finding your dream job

My story

My name is Nydia and I am an intern at Next Academy. I also didn’t know what I wanted to do nor to find my dream job, just like many of us. That is why I decided to come to Malaysia, all the way from the Netherlands. This was one of the best decisions I ever made. You will learn and experience so many great new things when you get out of your comfort zone.

If you live in another country than Malaysia, I really advise you to just take the step and go abroad. Come to Next Academy and learn how to code or learn about digital marketing. Getting out of your comfort zone is the best way to get to know yourself and to know what you want to do. Also, when you live in Malaysia, take that step and come to Next Academy. You will learn new things and you will meet great new people.

How to figure out your dream job

Make a list of your strengths

If you have a hard time thinking of your strengths, ask your friends and family. They will probably surprise you with the answers. You can also take a personality test to see what kind of strengths you have. It is good to think about your strengths instead of forcing yourself into a career path that might not fit you.

Evaluate your past

Think about how you felt in previous jobs. What did you like and what didn’t you like? If you know what you like you can focus on finding those things in your future job.

Talk to other people

Especially talk to those people that work in the field that you are interested in. They will tell you about their work, which can give you new insights into what kind of future job you want. Prepare yourself with questions you want to ask them, so you get the most out of the talk.

Think about what kind of work environment you like

Do you want a competitive or collaborative environment? Do you want to be friends with your colleagues outside the office? Do you want to work remotely or in an office? These are some of the points that you might ponder in finding your dream job.

Define what happiness is for your career

Think about what really interests you, something that you would be willing to do for free. If you would do it even for free, it would be a dream job to get paid for doing it.

‍

When you figured out what the dream job is, you will have to take action. You won’t get that perfect job in a day, so start with preparing yourself. Making a good resume is a great way to get started.

Tips to make a great resume

  • Show off your work with links. Add some hyperlinks to an online portfolio, blog post, or other work of yours that you are proud of.
  • Start your resume with a summary. In this short paragraph, highlight your career path which includes soft skills and technical skills.
  • Highlight personal projects. When you show personal or volunteer projects in your resume, it reflects a level of determination.
  • Showcase some interpersonal skills. Technical skills are essential in the computer science working field. However, companies need to hire a programmer that is also a people person.
  • Make sure it is typo-free. Keep your grammar consistent and make sure you spell things correctly.

‍

Another time that you have to represent yourself well, is at a networking event. This can be your time to find the job you want or make new connections that lead towards your new job.

Ways to crush a networking event

Get other people talking

Almost everyone loves to talk about themselves. You know yourself better than any subject in the world. Prepare some questions in advance that will have people talk about themselves. You can even look them up online if you don’t know what to ask.

Come with a list of things you are ready to say about yourself

It can be anything, from what you accomplished to what kind of school you have been to. Think about what kind of impression you want to give to other people. Have some great answers ready.

Know your place

Think about where you fit in. This way you can find people that would be a good fit as a mentor, or to build new connections.

Pay attention

Be engaged with the people that are right in front of you. It can be annoying if you notice that the person in front of you is looking for another person to talk to.

Practice a conversation

The reason you are good at something is that you are willing to put in the effort to become better, so practice. Family members and friends come in handy. They can also tell you about things you can improve or things you are good at.

Don’t mind the awkwardness

You know that there will be awkward moments. It is less awkward when you know that awkwardness is unavoidable.

But how do you find your dream job? In this video from Gary Vee, he explains how you can find your dream job without any experience.
