I worked as a sales and technical support in Brunei for a few years but as a Malaysian living in Brunei there weren't many opportunities for growth or stability because it's very difficult for any foreigner in Brunei to be granted permanent residency or citizenship.
My employer was also facing increasing difficulties in hiring foreign staff and while he was able to secure a visa for me, he wasn't sure how long he could keep doing so. When I found out about NEXT Academy, I decided to apply for the bootcamp.
During my time in NEXT, every day was an opportunity for growth and learning. There were days when I got stuck and couldn't continue on my own but the mentors were always there to guide me on how to continue forward. I also got to meet people from all sorts of backgrounds with all kinds of ideas to apply their newfound programming skills onto, and it showed to me that this isn't a career with just a single path - it's an entire world of possibilities and I'm excited to be part of it!
I'm currently working as a React developer and, as someone who previously worked in an unrelated field, I was amazed how smooth it was to transition into this role. It's all because NEXT gave me the prep I needed - not just the programming knowledge - but also the experience in working with a group to work on a project from start to finish.
Studying at NEXT was just the start that I needed to get my foot into the world of web development!
